To better support children with self-care skills and knowledge, YWCA will be presenting the Child Abuse Prevention Program (CAPP) and Teen Empowerment Program (TEP) presentations to our students the week of September 24, 2018. The Child Abuse Prevention Program presentations is for students in grades Kindergarten, 2, 4 and 5, and discuss the topics of bullying and sexual abuse. In addition, we discuss tools for safety such as: self-assertion, peer support, and telling a trusted adult if there is trouble. Our goal is to teach young people in an engaging and age-appropriate way to recognize, resist, and report abuse. The Teen Empowerment Program presentations, for students in the 6th grade, discuss the topics of bullying, sexual harassment, teen dating violence, and tools for staying safe in an age-appropriate manner. The goal is to teach teens in an engaging and age-appropriate way to identify and respond to bullying, harassment, and abuse. Students must have a parent permission form signed in order to participate.
Weekly music classes for all students in Kindergarten through 4th grade will begin next week!!! Students learn music appreciation, singing, recorders, bells, and the list goes on! Students in grades 5th and 6th have the option to sign up for band. Please contact the office for more information.

Parent Involvement/English Language Learners (ELAC) Thursday, September 20th at 6:00 P.M. Each school with 21 or more English Language Learners are required to establish an ongoing English Language Learner Advisory Committee. All parents/guardians of English Language Learners are encouraged to participate. ELAC advises the principal and School Site Council on mandated topics related to English Language Learners. Topics include: needs assessment, instructional strategies, school attendance, district master plan for English Learners, etc. Our first meeting will be held on Thursday, September 20th at 6:00 P.M. in the library. We look forward to seeing you there. We will be voting for membership.
Starting Monday, September 10th, all kindergarten classes will be in session from 8:00 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. Students go home at 12:30 p.m. only on Thursdays.

The School Site council provides parents with an opportunity to give input into our school improvement efforts and monitors the implementation of the School Site Plan. The School Site Council is composed of five community members and five staff members. We meet once a month on a Tuesday from 2:10 p.m. - 3:10 p.m. The first meeting is September 11 at 2:10 p.m. in the school library. We are currently seeking new members. Election Day will be here before you know it (November 6) and voters in this community will be voting for three ESD School Trustee positions. All five candidates for these positions have committed to a public forum to be held October 9th, beginning at 7 p.m. at Grace Church (2650 Aborn Rd.). Remember, you need to be registered in order to vote!
We are always proud to see a large ESD presence at Omar's Run, this year to be held Sunday, October 14 at 10:00 a.m. at Hellyer Park. This run raises funds to enable hospitalized and medically supervised kids to remotely attend school allowing them to stay connected to their teachers and classmates, in memory of ESD student Omar Hassan who passed away from leukemia in 2012. This was his dream and we run to help that dream become a reality. Check out their website for more and for registration information.
